DATA CENTRE COOLING NEWS

M247
EcoCooling provide 500kW of cooling for M247 are one of Europe"s leading web content delivery and Internet infrastructure providers, powering some of the world's busiest websites. M247 operates the state-of-the-art GlobalAXS Communications 10G network spanning London, Manchester, Amsterdam, Frankfurt and Brussels and the premium IceColo colocation facility in Manchester

EcoCooling have just completed the upgrading of the existing 100kW premium IceColo CoLocation facility for M247 in Manchester to provide 500kW of cooling. 14 EcoCooling CRECS are backed up by 7 CRACs to create a PUE of 1.17 (reduced from 1.6) The system uses cold isle containment and raised floors.
Crouzet microprocessor controls and Ethernet communications links have been used to provide

  • External temperature sensing
  • Multiple internal Temperature sensing
  • Multiple internal pressure sensing both below and above the raised floor

Evaporative Cooling of a Tier 1, 2mW  Data Centre for Blue Chip in Bedford

This project involves the cooling of a 2mW data centre housing 600 racks supported by the highest levels of resilience and security, which is expected to be the most energy efficient data centre in Europe with an anticipated PUE of 1.1

Blue Chip was established as a specialist company in 1987 to provide IT support services for IBM midrange users. It has grown to become the largest independent IBM midrange specialist in the UK and its customers include major banking institutions, finance houses, insurance companies, manufacturing companies and retail chains.

EcoCooling both advised and project managed the building of the data centre. The first phase of the project which will be up and running in late June is to provide .75mW of cooling covering an area of 24,000sqft for approximately 360 racks. The cooling 2 x  (n plus 1) is  provided by 30 ECP Evaporative coolers (n plus 1) backed up by an equivalent CRAC system (n plus 1). The CRAC system is there purely as a back up and is never expected to be switched on.

The cooling system in any data centre is, apart from the servers themselves and the IT equipment the most significant electricity consumer. By using evaporative cooling technology instead of refrigeration indirect electricity usage can be reduced by over 90%
Blue Chip wanted to create for its clients the most energy efficient green data centre possible. As Brian Meredith MD of Blue Chip said “The energy consumed in data centres is more than just a financial issue. The carbon footprint of our industry is significant and we must take action in reducing our energy use. Our customers are committed to reducing their impact on the environment. We support this by providing the most energy-efficient infrastructure available.”

London Ambulance
London Ambulance are using EcoCooling CRECS  to cool their new Olympic Call centre at Bow. 3  EcoCooling CRECS (N+1) will be used to cover a  60kW load .

DATA CENTRE COOLING IN BEDFORD
A new data centre in Bedford is the first company to receive a £500,000 loan from the carbon trust. The project involves the cooling of a 2mW data centre which will be cooled entirely by CRECS (computer room evaporative coolers) and is expected to have a PUE of 1.1 which will make it the most energy efficient data centre in Europe.

This loan is unsecured and interest free, with no arrangement fees and a straightforward application process. The Loan can be repaid over a period of up to four years and as the scheme is designed for energy savings to cover repayments, the loan will effectively pay for itself.
