Case Studies - Cooling Retail Premises
Bacons Shoes in Dudley, part of the Stylo Barratts chain of shoe shops, wanted a low cost method of keeping the city centre shop cool whilst still keeping the door open.
In a very competitive market running costs were also a significant factor.

TAn externally mounted EcoCooler feeds cooled air to the area over the suspended ceiling which acts as a plenum chamber. Standard grilles are installed where the air flow is required. The grilles can be easily relocated to either change the air flow distribution or reflect changes in the layout of the shop.

The EcoCooler can only run when the front door is open and a contact made in the control system. In manual operation there are five fan speeds and the option of pure ventilation or evaporative cooling. In automatic mode a combined thermostat/humidistat automatically controls the operation of the EcoCooler to achieve a set room temperature.
The performance of an evaporative cooler is dependent upon the ambient weather conditions. The hotter the air and the lower the relative humidity the greater the cooling effect. The charts below show the performance of evaporative cooling in Birmingham, UK and analysing the actual performance of an EcoCooler in this climate.
