Case Studies - Cooling the Leisure Centre

“IMPROVING CONDITIONS FOR CUSTOMERS AND STAFF”

The Gym at the Chipping Norton Leisure Centre was cooled using conventional air conditioning, providing approximately 36KW of cooling, this proved very costly to run and was not environmentally friendly.

To improve conditions and consume considerably less electrical power it was decided to install an EcoCooling Evaporative cooling system.

The system was designed and specified by Mr Duncan Boxford White of Wycombe Leisure, after careful research and consultation with Mr Alan Beresford of EcoCooling, the UK’s leading manufacturer and supplier of Evaporative cooling systems.

System Design

The scheme consisted of two low level extraction fans and one EcoCooling external high level Evaporative cooling unit, the air being introduced to the area through a high level textile duct, colour co-ordinated to compliment the existing decoration.

Post Installation Performance

The system was surveyed on the 16 August 2007 at 1.00pm.

External Temperature 17.2°C Entering Air Temperature 17.2°C
Internal Temperature 17.5°C

The EcoCooling unit was running on speed setting 2 out of 5 without the cooling section operational. Both extraction fans were switched off but the non-return shutters were allowing the pressurised air to escape from the area.

The cooling section was then switched on and the entering air temperature dropped to 13.2°C, the external humidity level was 55%, it was an overcast day.

The Gym now feels fresher and the previous odour problems have been banished due to the high air change rate that the EcoCooling system provides.

The old costly, uncomfortable air conditioning is now no longer needed.
